Save vs. Splurge: Living Room Edition
A big question we get asked by clients and friends, is where to save vs. where to splurge. It’s not always an easy question to answer but we have some ideas. Based on our years of experience, here is where we advise people to save or splurge in their living rooms.
Splurge on the sofa! This is a must! You sit on it every day. Your family gathers on it. Your pets and kids may nap on it. Every once in a while you will eat on it. It should be comfortable and durable. This will come at a price but it will be worth every penny!
Save on accent chairs. Accent chairs in a living room are mostly for looks or for a little perch when you are entertaining. You don’t need to break the bank on these. They just have to look good.
Splurge on the rug! A well made wool rug will clean up beautifully and last forever. It will feel good under foot and withstand the wear and tear of a high traffic area.
Save on window treatments. That does not mean eliminate them. They are still a must! Drapes make a room! However, simple linen panels will do the job both elegantly and affordably.
Splurge on lighting! It is like the jewelry of a space. And lighting sets the mood of the room. Functional and beautiful lighting is a necessity in any living space.
Save on accessories. Unless you are an art collector and have priceless items to display, you don’t need to overspend on accessories. A few coffee table books, a candle or two and some baskets are perfect for a living room. Then you can acquire treasures as you find them and you will have plenty of space for displaying them.
