The Art of Layering: How to Achieve a Luxurious Look with Textiles and Accessories

Have you ever seen a room that just falls flat?  The furniture is beautiful, but it is lacking that extra something.  What the room is missing is that extra layer of sophistication that can only be achieved through textiles and accessories.

What is Layering?

The concept of layering in interior design is the practice of combining colors, textures, and decor elements to create a cohesive and complete look for a room. It’s similar to layering clothing to achieve a certain look or feel.

Furniture is only the Foundation, You Need Textiles

When a designer says textiles, we mean rugs, upholstery, and curtains.  Your furniture is the base layer, or the foundation, then comes textiles.  Designers use rugs, window treatments, wall treatments and other upholstered items to add color, depth and texture to a space.  Without it, a space falls flat and never looks finished.

Accessories that Add Personality

Items like artwork, lighting and thoughtful décor infuse character and richness.  Accessories are an essential part of the overall design plan of a room.  Personally, a room that feels collected rather than overly styled, is more appealing.  Artwork should truly speak to you, not just be something you put on the wall.  A vase you got on a trip to Mexico tells a story and adds a personal element to the room.

Tips for Harmony

Mixing textures, colors and patterns can be tricky.  You don’t want too many different elements jumbled together.  That would look chaotic.  I like to stick to the 60, 30, 10 rule.  60% of the items in a room should have the same color and texture.  30% can add in another color, texture and/or pattern.  The last 10% should be your most bold choice and bring in even more color and pattern.

Luxury on Any Budget

Layering the décor in your home creates luxury that you need in a room.  My best advice for achieving layers is to invest in window treatments and rugs.  NEVER cut those from the budget.  You can add in accessories over time.

If a room ever feels like it’s falling just short, it’s often not the furniture that’s missing—it’s the finishing layers. Thoughtfully chosen textiles and accessories are what bring depth, warmth, and a quiet sense of sophistication to a space. They’re the elements that transform a room from simply furnished to truly complete.
