Our homes are our sanctuaries. And our bedrooms are even more so. They are our retreats within our homes; the place we go to sleep, recover and escape from the world. No matter what your personal decorating style is, there are key elements needed to create a restful and calming bedroom oasis.
Keep the color palette muted. Light or dark, softer tones are necessary to create a restful space. Think dusty pink instead of magenta, butter yellow instead of goldenrod, sage instead of emerald; toned down versions of saturated color. This helps your mind relax. Instead of seeing jolts of color that energize you, the softer colors will create a sense of calm in the space.
Lighting is important. You don’t want to have to turn on a full blast overhead light every time you enter your bedroom. Furthermore, you don’t want to have to get out of bed to shut off the light when you are ready for sleet. Definitely put overhead lighting on a dimmer switch. And make it a beautiful fixture. You’ll be staring at it from bed! Bedside lamps and sconces are essential as well. Make sure there is enough light for reading, but not so bright that it wakes you up.
Layer yourself in comfort. We are huge advocates of luxury bedding – soft, temperature regulating and layered. Sheets that get softer with every wash are favorites. Duvet covers in soft, washable fabrics like linen are wonderful and cozy, textured quilts are perfect for an added layer if needed. Customizable pillows (memory foam or ones where you order according to firmness) aide in creating comfort. A few decorative pillows just to make everything look beautiful are perfect. No need to overload your bed with throw pillows and blankets. If it doesn’t serve a purpose AND look good, it’s not necessary.
Cut the clutter. It is so much easier to relax in a tidy space. Too many items to look at in a space doesn’t allow your brain to rest. Keep the accessorizing minimal and put clothing and jewelry in their proper places.
Window treatments are essential. Lighting from the street or early morning sunrise can both interrupt sleep. Opt for blackout curtains or shades to eliminate these sleep disturbances. And make them beautiful! Both of these items can be custom made in fabrics of your choice and different styles.
